TMJ Disorders

At Indiana Orofacial Pain, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders—a group of conditions that affect the jaw joint, surrounding muscles, and the way your jaw functions. Led by board-certified Orofacial Pain Specialist Dr. Massimiliano (Max) Di Giosia, our team offers compassionate, evidence-based care to help patients find lasting relief from chronic jaw pain and dysfunction.

What Is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joints are the hinges that connect your lower jaw to your skull, located just in front of each ear. These joints allow you to speak, chew, yawn, and perform everyday movements involving your mouth and jaw. A TMJ disorder (often referred to as TMD) occurs when the joint, muscles, or surrounding tissues become inflamed, misaligned, or damaged, leading to pain and functional issues.

TMD can result from a number of causes, including:

  • Jaw clenching or teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Arthritis
  • Trauma to the jaw or head
  • Bite misalignment
  • Muscle overuse or strain
  • Stress-related tension

Common Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

TMJ disorders can present in a variety of ways, and symptoms often worsen over time if left untreated. Common signs include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when moving the jaw
  • Limited jaw movement or locking of the jaw
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Earaches or a feeling of fullness in the ears
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Difficulty chewing or discomfort while eating

  • If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's important to seek evaluation by a specialist trained in orofacial pain. Accurate diagnosis is key to effective treatment.
